Summertime: Take Your Exercise Routine Outdoors

Fitness

By Fitness Expert Holly Holton

Growing up in Louisiana, summers were usually hot and humid, with scorching temperatures being the norm.  Rather than enjoying our days under the sun, we were trapped indoors running from one air conditioned room to the next trying to stay cool.

Three years ago, I moved to beautiful Southern California in pursuit of my fitness dreams. Little did I know that also meant enjoying picture-perfect weather year-round.  There’s one piece of advice I share with all my clients: don’t restrict your workouts to the gym; make the outdoors your gym.

There are so many fitness activities that can be done alone or as part of a group.  For example, when you hike for an hour at L.A.’s hotspot Runyon Canyon you’re burning anywhere from 400-600 calories.  Even if you just happen to be taking a stroll down your neighborhood you are burning between 200-300 calories per hour.  Step it up a notch with some rollerblading and you can burn off around 1,000 calories during the same time span.  For all you bicycle lovers a ride will burn anywhere from 300-400 calories in one hour.  Those are very effective exercise activities, and best of all, they are fun!

The Get fit with Got Milk? program is launching at just the perfect time where we can all take advantage of our beautiful California summer weather while getting fit and sticking to our program.  What are some of your favorite outdoor fitness activities?  I can’t wait to hear all about them.

Socal is the ideal place to have your own “outdoor” gym. I try to make it fun and switch things up, making “workout dates” with different friends. What we’re doing next is meeting once a week, most likely on the weekends with 3 other friends. Each week it’s a different person’s turn to choose where/when/what in terms of the workout. My favorite is the Santa Monica stairs – amazing workout, with an even more amazing view of the canyon and beach! :-) Then off to Montana Ave for some smoothies and catch-up time with my friends!
